The 3.5 mm of space deficiency here does not warrant bicuspid extractions. SPEED brackets on the canines will generate enough distal thrust against the posterior segments to distalize them without advancing the incisors. The subtle interplay between SPEED brackets and Supercable, in combination with perioral muscle forces, permits tooth movements previously considered unachievable by such conservative means.
October 1994
There has been a 5.5 mm space gain in the lower arch (from -3.5 to +2.0 mm). Note that SPEED elastic hooks have been added to the distal of the lower canine brackets.
December 1994
A 3/8" 2 oz. elastic from canine to canine has provided sufficient space closure force, even with a .021x.025 nickel titanium archwire in place. The bicuspid hooks are for two unilateral 3/16" 2 oz. Class II elastics. All the SPEED brackets are acting in concert to maintain optimal root and crown attitude and to collectively resist displacement by the Class II elastics.
